There will come a point in life when you will have an opportunity to make a difference. Sometimes the difference is grand, often times objectively speaking its not that grand. Whether something monumental or something obscure and personal, your actions will be recorded in the greatest log, History. I’m speaking from a metaphorical stance, giving identity to an abstract concept.

Keep in mind that eventually everything becomes a part of History. When the sun rises on today the concept that is yesterday has now become History. I want to encourage you to take a moment and ponder your present. Would your choices and actions land you on the right side of history? Or would you be vilified and cursed?

The RIGHT side of History

So, what do I mean when I say the Right side of History? I mean based on your choices and actions, when your today becomes yesterday will it contribute to a better tomorrow? Some prime examples of this notion are the countless men and women who made the choice to fight for the rights of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. The protests, speeches, and sacrifices would ultimately make a better tomorrow for a whole race of people.

On a smaller scale, when you do something for someone else or even yourself, and it leaves a lasting positive impact, that act will be remembered fondly. By choosing to do something selfless and positive you helped make someone’s experience in this life all the more manageable. Be kind for the sake of being kind. Rise above yourself because legacy matters more than glory.

The WRONG side of History

If being selfless leads to the Right side of History, then by default selfishness leads to the Wrong side of History. This goes without saying that if you are a bad person, History will remember you as such. Keep in mind that being a “bad person” is subjective. There’s being a villain, then being seen as a villain. Sometimes they line up, sometimes they don’t.

A truly bad person is someone whose choices and actions actively ruin the lives of others. History is filled with them. One of the most notorious was Hitler. His selfish hate fueled choices landed him firmly on the Wrong side of History. He ruined the lives of an entire group of people.

Sometimes being a bad person isn’t as egregious as a tyrant, or murderer. Sometimes we could be having a bad day and say something out of the way to someone else. Maybe you try to do something to get back at somebody, or countless other things. This doesn’t make you a bad person, but it does run the risk of making you a bad person in the eyes of someone else. Take time to think before you act and know that the impression you leave behind is your legacy.

The RIGHT side of His Story

On a spiritual note, for a lot of people it becomes priority number 1 to be on the Right side of His story. When I say His, I mean God. We acknowledge that he is alpha and omega and the author and finisher of our faith. He gave us all life, each with unique gifts, talents, and purpose. For a lot of people this means very little. However, to a large number of people finding this purpose and walking in it is the most important thing.

How do we end up on the Right side of His story…we do as he would. We use our gifts and talents to help others and find and fulfill whatever our purpose is. All of this while being a good person. Jesus had a very specific assignment while on this earth. He completed his assignment, and he did so while being a good person. Are we Jesus Christ? No. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t strive to be like him. For the reward of being on the Right side of His story is eternal life. To be on the Wrong side of His story means eternal damnation.

In Closing…

What we do today echoes in the ether of yesterday. All of our choices and actions will eventually draw a line in the sand. What side of that line we choose to leave our legacy on is up to us. If I had any advice, it is to take care and be mindful of your choices and actions in life. Ask yourself is what I’m doing or want to do going to land me on the Right side of History when it’s all said and done? Go in good faith for you are also working to end up on the Right side of His story as well. You Got This!
